If you’re interested in a smart thermostat but just haven’t gotten around to it, new incentives from Focus on Energy and Minnesota Energy Resources mean that if you live in Wisconsin or Minnesota now’s the time to do it. In fact, the incentives are substantial enough you may want to do it now even if it hasn’t been on your mind.

Focus on Energy, a program offered in partnership with Wisconsin utilities, is now offering a $75 cash incentive for qualifying smart thermostats. That represents a 33 percent discount, for example, on the Nest Thermostat which typically runs around $200. And if you’re willing to bargain shop, it could represent a savings of up to 45 to 50 percent.

Across the river, Minnesota Energy Resources will pay 50 percent (up to $100) of the total cost for smart thermostats.

And if you’re installing a new furnace (or cooling equipment) for the cold months ahead, ask your service provider to install a smart thermostat at the same time and receive a wad of additional energy incentives.

Requirements for the Wisconsin incentive, including participating utilities, can be found on Minnesota requirements can be found on In both states, homes heated by petroleum gas or geothermal heat pumps aren’t eligible.

Even without the incentive, smart thermostats will pay for themselves quickly as they save up to $120 annually.
